EXIT - 2020
EXIT: International Mail Art Exhibition Dedicated to Max Moreau, is a Mail Art display gathering more than 200 pieces in a postcard format that have been sent from 25 different countries. The received artworks present various testimonies from people who have had the experience of living outside of their home country, and they do so using different techniques such as drawing, collage, photography or writing.
The aim with this project, articulated as a colaborative exhibition, is to gather and to introduce the situation that hundreds of people who come from countries far away from each other and whose culture varies significantly from one another have to face. It has been possible to gather all of those testimonies of travelers and emmigrants trhough this exhibition, which takes place in a significant location to this purpose: the Casa Museo Max Moreau (Carmen de los Geranios).
This building located in the granadian neighborhood called Albaicín was the home of the Belgian artist Max Moreau, painter and composer, after a non-stop traveling life. Max lived in many cities in Belgium and France, in Tunisia, Bahamas, the United States, Portugal, England, Morocco, Argelia and, finally, settled in Spain. He dedicated his life to painting and music and constantly looking for change and the unknown, anything that would enrich his creations, although not all of his traveling was for pleasure. Just as many other artists, Max Moreau faced the need of exiling as World War II started and, despite his wanderlust, he kept a very close relationship with his family, which can be supported by the wide mail correspondance that is currently kept in the museum.
This is why the place that could best host the testimonies of so many people, most of them artists, is the home of this artist. Both the stories of those who travel for pleasure and the ones of whom face terrible situations that force them to emmigrate can establish a strong connection with this space and what it represents: Max Moreau’s life.
EXIT is an international project through which people from different cultures find a space to share their experiences with others who understand them and walk in the same shoes as them.
